The separate cold pack is the piece that goes wrong: still sitting in the freezer on a rushed morning, or taking up half the box when it is there. Here the cooling element is the bag itself, so nothing extra has to be bought, frozen or hunted down.
Anyone who wants to swap in a fresh ice pack, since the gel is sealed inside the walls, and anyone wanting a bag for the wash: PackIt state it is not machine or dishwasher safe.
Look at the flat space your freezer actually offers. Eight hours folded down in there is what brings the bag to full cooling power, and folded it comes in around 10.25 by 8 inches.
