Rolling a desk chair across wood or laminate presses grit into the finish and wears a track along the caster path. A clear mat takes that wear while the floor stays visible underneath it.
Carpet. This is the smooth-backed hard-floor type, so on carpet it slides and buckles, while the studded carpet type would press its spikes into a wood or laminate finish.
Confirm your floor type before ordering, because the same brand sells a separate studded version for low-pile carpet and the two are not interchangeable.
